We’re all familiar with it, aren’t we? The podcasts, the blogs, the shows...all saying: “Go on, do it, leave your job. Live a life of freedom!” And who does this message come from most of the time? Usually the most successful people, who have already achieved their goals, have nothing to lose, and are giving this advice from a privileged point of view. But does that mean this is wise advice for most people? Definitely not! For many people who quit their jobs without a sound exit strategy, the consequences can be severe. Read on to learn why quitting a role impulsively can be a mistake, and instead find out how to manage at your current job while you pursue another, more enjoyable career path.
3 Reasons to Not Quit Impulsively
Challenging Job Market Statistics show that the unemployment rate has decreased by 26 percent in the past few years. If you suddenly quit your job, that means finding another job may be a huge risk as it could take weeks or even months to find a replacement. Before you consider quitting, try to have a better job lined up first.
Psychological Impacts of Unemployment When quitting a job is brought up, the cognitive toll is rarely considered. But when a person is unemployed with a lot of free time, they are often left with the psychological worry and stress that comes with financial uncertainty. Studies have shown that when people are worried about financial stressors, their performance on cognitive tasks declines to a degree comparable to losing IQ points. In early 2025, analysis suggested that 43 percent of unemployed people reported poor mental health, compared to 27 percent of those who were employed.
Household Resilience: Impulsively leaving a job can be particularly problematic to individuals with dependents. In 2024, the cost of family care centers rose by 50 percent, while healthcare and childcare costs increased by 40 percent between 2017 and 2025. In this environment, the "just leave your job" advice assumes that all families have a level of financial stability that most households do not possess. For every high-profile individual who quit a toxic job and managed to start a million-dollar company, there are thousands who spent their savings, damaged their reputation, and accepted a lower-quality role out of desperation in the end.
How to Stay the Course Until You Find Better Employment
Identify the Issue: Is it the location? The environment? The endless workloads, or the endless boredom? Perhaps it’s a manager you just can’t stand. Or maybe it’s everything. Regardless of what the issue is, in order to survive at the job until you find something better, consider speaking up about the issues that are making you unhappy and doing so in a professional way. Chances are, you’re not the only employee struggling with these issues, so it should be in the company’s best interest to try and resolve them.
Re-evaluate Time: Accept the fact that your working day is only a portion of your overall day, so make sure you get the most out of the time you have free. Cancel work socials if you don’t want to go, and don’t offer to do overtime. Put your mental health first, whether that means taking time for yourself or detaching from the job emotionally. Thinking of the job as a temporary situation may help you to think of it as a “stepping stone” to your next professional destination.
Find a Side Hustle: If you can’t rely on your job for fulfillment, try to shift your attention to something else, like a side hustle. Dedicate your energy to this new endeavor, and you may find that it helps your overall mood enough that you can better endure the workday. Also, don’t forget to use your PTO (paid time off) days if you have them.
Focus on the Future: Set aside dedicated time each week to search for new jobs and apply for them.
