Flexible Careers That Help DV Survivors Rebuild Their Lives

Remote, work-from-home, and flexible careers can offer safety and the chance to grow at your own pace.

By Duncan Kiptoo

Walking away from an abusive environment is one of the hardest choices anyone can make. After reaching safety, survivors often begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives in an effort to achieve financial independence and stability. Employment can play a major role in helping them regain confidence, security, and a sense of control.

Domestic violence is when someone in a close or family relationship hurts or controls another person to scare or dominate them. Domestic violence can include physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse. Anyone can experience domestic violence, whatever their background. Domestic violence is never your fault. For many survivors, traditional 9-to-5 jobs can feel overwhelming, especially when balancing healing, childcare, or legal matters. That’s why flexible careers are so powerful: They can offer safety and the chance to grow at your own pace.

Remote Career Options for Survivors

  • Remote opportunities: Working from home as a virtual assistant, online customer support agent, or technical support specialist allows survivors employment opportunities  while balancing personal and family responsibilities. Remote work reduces commuting stress and offers privacy, which can be crucial during recovery.

  • Freelance work: Freelancing in writing, graphic design, or social media management can give individuals control over their workload and schedule. Survivors can choose clients who align with their values and gradually build confidence through independent projects.

  • Gig-based jobs: Short-term opportunities like ride-sharing, delivery services, or contract-based tasks may provide quick income and flexibility. These roles can be stepping stones toward financial independence while survivors rebuild stability.

  • Healthcare support roles: Positions such as medical coding, telehealth assistance, and caregiving often come with adjustable shifts. These careers not only provide income but also allow survivors to contribute meaningfully to others’ well-being.

  • Small business opportunities: Launching a personal business — whether tutoring, selling handmade products, or offering online services — empowers survivors to regain confidence and establish financial stability. Entrepreneurship can be a path to independence and self-expression.

  • Nonprofit and advocacy work: Survivors often find purpose in advocacy roles, using their lived experiences to support others and drive change. Nonprofit organizations value empathy and resilience, making this a meaningful career path.
