For IPV survivors, seeking employment can feel overwhelming. Check out these 5 tips to make the process easier.

Starting a job search is stressful for anyone. For survivors of intimate partner violence or domestic violence, there are often extra layers to contend with--safety concerns, limited resources, and a need to move quickly. Here are five things worth knowing before you jump in.

1. You may qualify for expedited unemployment benefits

In many states, survivors who had to leave a job due to domestic violence may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Laws vary by state, but it's worth checking with your state's labor department or a local DV advocate who can help you manage the process.

2. Your personal information can be protected

If you’re concerned about your safety and don’t want an abuser to find your workplace, you do have options. Many states offer programs that can keep your address private, and using a P.O. box on job applications can help, too. Be careful with what you post on public job sites like LinkedIn.

3. Free resume and career support exists

You don’t have to spend money on resume help or career advice. Services like Reignite Resumes offer free, professional support made just for survivors. These resources are here for you, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

4. Employers are not allowed to discriminate against survivors

It’s against the law in many places for employers to fire you or turn you down just because you’re a survivor. Knowing your rights is important. If something doesn’t feel fair, reach out to legal aid in your area.

5. You get to set the pace

There's no single right timeline for re-entering the workforce. Some survivors need to move fast for financial reasons. Others need more time to stabilize. Either way is valid. What matters is having a plan and the proper support around you.
